Principal's Greeting

Dr. TalbottWelcome and thank you for visiting the McMillan Magnet Middle School web page. As the Principal, I believe it is important for you to know the vision and mission of McMillan, in addition to being well informed throughout your student's education at McMillan. I encourage you to provide feedback anytime to help us improve this website and the information it provides.

The Vision of McMillan Magnet Center is to:

• Collaborate with school, family, and community-based partners.
• Provide an innovative, project-based, cross-curricular school setting.
• Integrate components of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math through Project Lead the Way (PLTW).

We take this vision very seriously and want to ensure we all work together. . . school, family, and community. Please know we will be working hard to ensure students have a positive and productive experience at McMillan.

The Mission of McMillan Magnet Center is to academically challenge students and to promote student ownership of learning in a safe, diverse, and respectful environment. We are proud of the fact we also can provide all of our students’ unique educational opportunities in the areas of technology, math, and engineering. In order to support the vision, mission, and magnet goals, we will be infusing components of the growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. Please help us by encouraging students to take chances and try, even when it seems they may not succeed the first time. The struggle may help create the triumph later in life. Thomas Paine, English-American political activist, author, political theorist and revolutionary once said, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow.”

We have high expectations for all our students in the classroom, school common areas, and during our school events. McMillan students are expected to be good citizens and knowledgeable of their rights and privileges. They should also be aware of their responsibilities to themselves and to others in order to be contributing members of a changing society. We will help prepare students through consistent procedures and routines by our teachers and support staff. We will have common building rules and expectations that students will know, understand, and have an opportunity to practice on a regular basis. Please encourage students to make good choices by referring to those rules and expectations regularly and have conversations with your students about the specifics of those rules and expectations. One expectation I would like to highlight is the use of student assignment notebooks. This is a great tool to keep parents regularly informed so please ask to see those on a daily/nightly basis.

To help us achieve our goals, we encourage you to involve yourself in your student's ongoing educational development. Close cooperation between students, staff, family, and the community is the key to enable students to reach their highest potential. We encourage you to be a part of our Parent Teacher Organization so please sign up if you have not done so already. If you have any questions or need information not found on the website, we encourage you to call (402) 557-4500.
